I have a dell latitude locked up on a word document

If you can get no response from the computer (including by using the three-finger-salute: ctrl-alt-del) then your only choice is to force the laptop off by holding down the power button. But Alabalcho is correct, most if not all of the document should have been saved by Word, and when you click on it to reopen it (after you restart the computer), Word should restore it to its (hopefully) complete original form.
