If the video resolution is set to high the 1080p TV will not show a picture. Set the HDMI as a second display and make sure the resolution is correctly.
You may have a handshake problem. Try turning on the TV after the mac is booted up and vice versa. Also try switching to a different input that is active and back to the input that the mac is connected to.
