I lost my remote to my tv and I mm trying to use a app on my phone for the remote and it says both devices need to be hooked up to the same wifi I'm trying to hook my tv up to the wifi but have no ideal how to do it without a remote

If the TV itself lacks the controls to access and navigate menus I would say you will need the original remote.
A universal remote may not access all the original remote functions. A Logitech Harmony probably will.
