Your can't use HDMI-ARC unless both the TV and receiver support it. The usual alternative is to use the optical audio output of the TV to connect to the receiver. There is no loss in quality. Check the TV and receiver manuals on how to set it up.

Most newer Onkyo receivers support ARC, just not on all HDMI ports. What model is your Onkyo?
