I have a Sony flat screen Sanyo HDTV and it's about 4 maybe 5 yrs old can I connect that to wifi

If it has an ethernet port, yes. If it has a USB port, maybe, consult manual.

If your TV isn't "smart" you can educate it by connecting a computer, android box, Roku, Apple TV or Amazon Fire. Most of these will connect to your TV with HDMI (some Roku have av connections too) and to the internet via WIFI or ethernet.
You can use KODI on many of these devices to stream lots of stuff.
