I have an older pioneer surround system. I have it hooked up to the tv to play movies but we want to watch tv and listen to it too. There is not a HDMI outlet in my system. I have tried the optical cord through converter down to red and white outputs and get buzzing but that is it. Can answers?

Your TV needs to be set to PCM (not surround sound) for the optical output. Your converter can't handle the muti-channel optical output.
