I just bought a brand new Bose QuietComfort 15 headset, and it comes with only one cord for both audio and microphone. My asus laptop only has one audio/mic combo jack. When I plug my headset into the jack the microphone doesn't pick up sound or even show that it is present. The only mic that is shown is the internal laptop mic. I have checked every physical attribute and nothing is wrong or off. If anyone knows how to fix this please help!

Solution

From the manual (page 22):

"This combo jack can be used to connect (...) audio speakers or headphones, OR can be used to connect an external microphone (...)", so unfortunately you cannot use both of them at the same time :( ...

In order to make your headphones work as they should, you must buy an external USB audio card, something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Syba-SD-AUD20101-Adapter-VT1620A-Controller/dp/B00JOCK6EK/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1410152098&sr=1-1&keywords=usb+sound+card

Or this, to make justice to the headphone's audio quality:

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Xonar-U7-Sound-Card/dp/B00E7QA9E0/ref=sr_1_22?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1410152098&sr=1-22&keywords=usb+sound+card

Just remember you...

I know they are not the same, I just showed you how the adapter would look. You didn't receive any other accessories in the box, a cable or something?

EDIT: I just observed you said you only have a single jack plug onto your laptop; in this case, you cannot use the microphone and the headphones at the same time. What is the exact model of your laptop?

Just remember you will still need an adapter:

http://www.amazon.com/Bose-40399-headphones-airline-adapter/dp/B008F5JXA0 , or:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BOSE-airline-headphone-adapter-for-QC-2-3-15-20-and-AE2-headphones-airplane-/221497458325?pt=US_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item339246fe95.

The three-section plug will go into the headphone jack and the two-section plug will go into the microphone jack.

You could try contact the Asus support, but I doubt they could find another solution.
