Did you connect the TV optical audio output to the RCA optical input?
Did you turn that output on in the TV menu? You may also have to turn the TV speakers off.

yes. I also tried the other cables. I can't seem to get into the tv menu for settings.

I don't have an optical cable. I used HDMI from amazon box to surround unit to tv. then I tried HDMI from surround to tv and amazon box to tv. I only get sound for dvd, and can't seem to get into surround unit settings or the tv menu for settings.

the tv should have an optical input on the back of it. you need an optical cable to connect from the back of the TV to an optical input on you amp/soundbar in order to get sound from all sources on your TV

its possible you may only have a coax audio input or RCA

there is only one HDMI port on surround sound. I put HDMI from amazon box to surround and and component cables to tv and get no video or sound
