Incompatible backups

I created back up file from a now deceased iPAQ 3660 and tried to restore
this to a 3630. However Activesync advises that the file cannot be restored
as it was created from a different type of device. I was amazed at this as
the only difference between the two is the amount of RAM, and as the backup
file is less than 20 MB and the 32 MB of the 3630 is nearly all free there
must be enough RAM available.

Both devices were originally running Windows Mobile 2000 and both have been
upgraded to 2002 from the same CD-ROM, so they must have the same ROM image.
Apparantly something as small as different regional settings can result in
Activesync detecting a device as being different from the one from which the
back up was created, however I am certain that the two devices have the same
regional settings. Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Once there was a fix from Compaq which allowed restoring backup on a the
same model of PDA which came from repairs with changed mainboard. It was an
issue of CPU revision difference I think.

Thanks Jakub. Any idea where I could find this fix?

It surprises me that this the restore process is so selective. In our
organization all laptops (thousands of them) are loaded with the same
"image" before being issued to users. Surely there must be other
organizations who have standard issue PDAs who set them up with a standard
configuration of data, appplications and settings before issuing them to
users, and who would want to use a "restore" of a standard image rather than
loading/configuring each device individually? By the sounds of what you say
Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, have prevented this.

Typical isn't it? Not something like "this backup was created from a
different device and transfering it to your device may result in unstable or
non-function applications. No you wich to proceed anyway". No. In true
Microsoft fashion the decision is made for you and the process refuses to
proceed!!

Such companies as you mentioned use other software to do so - not this lame
ActiveSync backup. The best choice is Sprite Software Clone or Pocket Backup
utils.
