install and enable external ACER speakers onto ACER Aspire laptop?

I recently purchased an "Acer Aspire E1-731-4699" which came with Windows 7 preloaded. I have no problems with the internal speakers. However when I tried to plug in my Bose external speakers into the audio jack they did not work. So I went to the store and purchased Logitech speakers to plug into the audio jack and they still don't work. The green light is on for both the "Bose and Logitech" speakers. But yet I'm getting no sound. When I click "playback devices on the sound" the speakers aren't even showing up. It's almost as if the computer doesn't recognize that they're there. WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM PLEASE HELP WITH AN IN DEPTH ANSWER AS IVE TRIED EVERYTHING, ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Maybe the jack is not working? Try using some headphones/ earphones that you might have. And if there is another jack try it out.
