Intel Iris 540 or Intel HD 520

Need help deciding between a machine powered by an i7-6560U + Iris 540 with 8GB memory or i7-6500U + HD 520 with 16GB memory.

While this machine is to be a general use laptop, I enjoy future proofing my home laptop purchases. Plus, I'd enjoy being able to play SimCity or Civ from time to time.

Help please.

The Iris 540 is more powerful than the HD 520. Iris and HD aren't even comparable from a performance standpoint.

Thanks for the clarification. So that confirms my understand of Iris vs HD. But should I have pause that the Iris only features 8 GB in this case? Or have they packed the HD with extra RAM to make up for it's lower performance capabilities?

I do not think so the extra ram would make much of a difference in terms of graphics performance. 8gb is sufficient for general purpose. Extra ram comes in handy for running more programs concurrently, more tasks done at the same time.

8gbs of ram is more than enough for everything except video editing I tried to use it all and couldn't with 6 games 8 Firefox tabs 10 chrome tabs and a second account doing similar stuff, anyway I'm getting off track get the laptop with Intel iris graphics

You can checkout some benchmarks of the Iris 540 in the following link. It's performance is between the nVidia 920m and 930m; being closer to the 930m.
