[citation][nom]cobra5000[/nom]What is up w/these XP bashing posts? On Tom's here? Common sense that will tell you, 7 is still BRAND NEW and the Vista was PURE CRAP! The only time most end-users upgrade their OS is when they buy a new computer. Why should i blow $100 bucks to use a browser that i never use?[/citation]

no anyone with common sense and half a brain will tell you it was idiots who don't know jack about PC's were the only ones who thought vista was crap.

If people don't want to upgrade OS, why do they care about upgrading IE? There is ie8 for XP, stick with it or use another browser. Personally, I use windows 7 on my desktop and dual-boot XP and Linux on my laptop and not bitching about it.

It always seems like MS always has a couple less than perfect OS releases before they bust out a new release that completely destroys the couple previous bad eggs. Windows XP was all I needed to put the whole 9x family behind me. Then came Vista. I used it, but for a good while I needed XP. Still, I kept with Vista because it had stuff XP could only dream of. Now we have Windows 7 and I feel just like I did when I first installed XP. When I installed XP, I never wanted to look at 9x again. Now, I really don't want to use XP again.

I'm really finding that the requirements to have a fully functional Win 7 system are quite comparable to a decent Win XP system nowadays. Who would want to try to run Win XP on only 128 MB of RAM now? I find that I'd really need a gig to be happy. Same for Win 7.

Oh well. Windows XP has had a damn good run, but all good things must come to an end!

[nom]xbeater[/nom]I know something that DOES work on windows XP: FIREFOX!!![/citation]

Problem: Microsoft will stop supporting XP in updates and patches which in the end will mean less and less software/driver support.

After a short time (probably the next year or two) Firefox probably wont support XP anymore.

[citation][nom]sliem[/nom]So... we stay with Firefox/Chrome, yes?[/citation]

Or upgrade to Windows 7 wich is and always will be superior to XP.

XP was great for its time. It lasted a long time. But 7 is better in every way, especially with multicore CPUs and 4GB+ of memory.

[citation][nom]Marco925[/nom]Some of us don't like the user friendliness that i call Dummifying. Some of us are happy on our GUIs that don't really want to be forced to change. If MS wouldn't change everything every release. maybe we'd have incentive to upgrade. Namely myself, one thing i like about OSX is that it doesn't change much in terms of usability when you upgrade. things aren't moved around. but however i don't like OSX much so I won't be changing to OSX. i'll stick with XP. I'll go to Vista before i go to windows 7 anyday.[/citation]
[citation]

Um Vista and 7 are the SAME thing, but 7 has improved multicore handleing and better memory management.

And BTW, you can change the theme back to XP, just like in XP you could change it to 98s theme. And nothing is really "moved" around like you say. Everything is in the same place, they just have ways of accessing more data in one place (Libraries) and you can include or exclude folders.

When you do upgrade, if you choose Vista over 7 that would be a amatuer mistake.

Actually 7 is more stable and secure than Vista or XP. When XP was new, yea it sucked. SP2 finally turned it around.

But Vista was by no means crap. I had it before 7 and it was a great OS. I like 7 better but Vista still gave me no problems. Hell I got Command & Conquer 95 edition and Duke Nukem 3D to run on Vista without problems, aside from no frame limiters.

Yeah, Vista was nowhere near as bad as it was perceived. Used to run it before Windows 7 and had no problems. Weirdly, Windows 7 actually seems to take slightly longer to boot on here than Vista did. Both are just as responsive on this computer.

That aside, Windows 7 is much faster than Vista on less capable hardware. Found that out by experimenting with my 5 year old laptop. Perhaps it's partly because of people installing Vista on older hardware and all the crapware that comes with OEM installs which was particularly bad at the time that led to the negative reception. Nowadays, Vista is a decent OS, but it doesn't matter any more since Windows 7 is better.

In its heyday, XP was great. But now it's time to move on before it becomes another IE6. I can just imagine developers getting annoyed about having to support XP in the future despite its limitations just because it still holds significant marketshare. (no DX11 and with it D2D for starters) :)

[citation][nom]thedipper[/nom]Of course they're trying to make people stop using XP. XP support is only costing them money at this point, those deveopers could be located elsewhere, doing something that actually makes sense, rather than providing support code for an outdated OS.Users on really old machines running XP are hurting the entire computing industry.[/citation]

Maybe so, but some of us simply cannot afford a new OS. Unless, of course, you're willing to buy copies for the less fortunate? :)

[citation][nom]axilon[/nom]This is more or less a 'corporations' need to move to windows 7 for IE 9.[/citation]

This is a more of a big ringer for home users who don't seem to realize that the OS they're using is nearly 10 years old.

Probably a lot of PC's from the past 2 years could handle Win 7 just fine, it's just that the user might not be technically knowledgeable on how to install an OS.

Well, that will leave XP users with Firefox with a DirectX 9 Cairo rendering interface...

Wait, they're actually considering it!

Good, another nail in XP's coffin.
Seriously, the sooner that old 32-bit OS gets killed off, the sooner programmers can focus more on better 64-bit software and many threaded apps.

XP was great in its day, now just let it RIP.

im not sure about the other firefox guys saying firefox is ok with little memory. for some weird reason i couldnt figure out, at times my firefox eats up to 1.2 gig of ram, with only 7 tabs opened at the same time. could be a virus on my machine that im not aware of, or the sites that i visit, which half are localhost like phpmyadmin and my current project, and yahoo mail, plus a manga site, which i close if no updates are present. dunno what mozilla is doing about this..

i am still on xp and i have a modern and very fast machine.
it works and does not crash
all my games/applications work great
why should i upgrade to win 7 ???
does not make sense for me
i will stick with firefox

You also don't get as much out of multi-threaded applications, will see no real benefit from innovations made (unless directly applied to drivers), and are limited to >4GB of RAM.

Does not make sense to me.

[citation][nom]noodlegts[/nom]Good. It's about time that people stopped using XP.I still can't believe computers still run that OS. It's 10 years old![/citation]
It's on my gaming rig and still running fine you MS troll. Almost all new PC games are still made to run on XP and run with DX9. I will get 7 when I need to not because some hack tells me I should.

They may not be lying since MS ties their browser to the kernel so the FEDS have their back door into your machine.
Just like when Vista and DX 10 came out and MS did this trick. They tried to force gamers to switch to their latest crapware. It did work even after they paid off a couple game studios to release several DX 10 only games.
This time they really are dumb. IE sucks and there are many free browsers that run fine on XP.

People that continue to tout internet explorer as being the browser of choice get no respect from me. Even worse, they use internet explorer as a false excuse to bash a perfectly good operating system that will continue to be supported right up to 2014. Shameful.

Pure nonsense. Firefox still supports Windows 2000, Opera still supports it as well, and also Windows 98 and Windows ME.

A lot of the people here like to sound cool and criticize people who prefer to stay with older software they are comfortable with. I know you guys like to sound smart and cool, and use this as a way, but, realistically, you don't know much of anything.

People get comfortable with something, and they don't need to change it if it isn't broken. I personally don't like retraining people because Microsoft found another bad way of presenting things. There really hasn't been any use for a new operating system since Windows 2000, but Microsoft has to keep making them so they can generate more money. They could make tweaks, of course, but, really, the UI changes haven't been good (almost all techs I know go back to the "classic look"), and the OS is a lot slower and consumes much more memory. Most of all, people are comfortable with their old OS, and the new one doesn't do anything it couldn't do without relatively minor internal tweaks.

well said

XP has had the best run out of any Microsoft OS, it is just beginning to show its age as an OS. With that said, i wish windows 7, was windows XP with 64-bit support...and don't twist my words and say what about windows xp-64bit...i really don't care for the pretty-ness of windows7 but i wish it looked like XP. JMO

Absolutely! I will be switching from XP to Win 7 in about 2 months. XP is over. It was a great ride but it's time folks. I'm glad I didn't jump on the Vista bandwagon. Windows 7 will be a better transition for me.
