inverter versus screen

is there an easy way to determine if a failed notebook display is the inverter or the screen itself? my screen comes on for a moment when booting or switching to the notebook versus external monitor, and back. screen is dimmed, kind of organge-ish when you can see it.

from your discription it looks like the CCFL light tube(s) might be failing. When light tubes are showing signs of failure they normally go dim, have a yellowish, orange or even pink tint to the displays image. The only fix is to replace the display.

You can replace just the lamps themselves but it requires more work and care.
