IPad as HTPC Remote

Hi there, my Dad got a 3rd gen iPad for his birthday this morning and has been looking for an app to allow him to use it as a remote of sorts for our HTPC (Windows 7 based). He wants to be able to do things like change music in Songbird and watch movies in VLC as well as perform general tasks from anywhere in the house. What would be the best way/app to go about doing this? I've seen some remote desktop kind of things that look viable but what would you recommend?

For media control, you could try either HippoRemote or Mobile Mouse. The best app I've used for controlling musing on my HTPC is Apple's Remote app, but it only works for iTunes.
