iPod touch Bluetooth speaker and listening to music from the dock at the same time

We think we have an iPod 4th gen with iOS 6. When we pair to a Bose speaker we don't get any sound from the dock. Is this normal?

Yes.
The iPod (probably a iTouch) will only output audio one way at a time.
You could split the audio out of the dock and connect a BT transmitter to one of the outputs. You would then pair the speaker with that transmitter rather than the one built into the iPod.
