Is it worth it to connect an external gpu to my laptop?

I currently have the Lenovo y50 (4710hq, 8gb ram, 860m) and am looking to either add an external GPU or build a new PC. Will the performance impact from using PCIe 1x be significant enough with a high-end GPU (1080/1070) to justify building a new PC? I don't care about portability or having the cover off and already using an external monitor. Would this be a good temporary solution as I will probably end up building a PC once I save up a little more?

Here's a link for you on the subject: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2984716/laptop-computers/how-to-transform-your-laptop-into-a-gaming-powerhouse-with-an-external-graphics-card.html. Honestly, I think you'll spend more money getting a laptop/eGPU up and running with poor performance, then if you just build a mid-grade desktop system that will meet your needs

I wouldn't recommend it. The only external GPU I know is the Razor Core, unless they released a new one. I would just recommend building a computer, because it would be cheaper and easier in the long run...especially if you are using an external monitor.

There are mini PCIe to 16x adapters that use the mini PCIe slot in laptops taken by the wifi card (I use ethernet anyways) they are also really cheap. Do you know how much performance is impacted by an external gpu?
