Is my graphics card thermal throttling?

hey,
I own the MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G (running 1440p resolution)
I can't do any significant overclock what so ever, even w/ stock clocks my frame rate deeps to ~20 fps after around 30 minutes of gaming, in games from Battlefield 3 and counter-strike GO to less demanding games. I have to alt tab the game for ~1 minute the fans kick in and i return to normal frame rates for about 15 more minutes before I have to repeat the process. also occasionally the driver crashes ( not that regularly though)
Should I RMA it or is there any solution?
any of you having this problem w/ the msi 970?

Try running GPU-z to identify what problems are occuring + set a custom fan profile to try and keep it constantly cool if temps are the issue.

I've tried fan profiles including constant 70% fan speed. still the same problem.
I'll try gpu-z

Your best bet is to make it record the GPU log and post it for analysis.

For what it's worth, that doesn't tell us which specific model of MSI laptop you own.

Are you possibly referring to the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro with the 4K display and GTX 970m graphics card?

I never said it was a laptop
I'm runing a desktop gpu
