Sometimes when I get software the installer carry's an icon with the letters "NSIS".

This is going to sound like a silly question but does the NSIS icon spread like a virus on to other installers by placing its icon on the installer instead of the original? Or is the NSIS icon only on installers made with NSIS?

Solution

It can be either:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/nsis/

https://malwaretips.com/blogs/downloader-nsis-removal/

http://www.avgthreatlabs.com/us-en/virus-and-malware-information/info/downloader-nsis/

a quick google returns:

Effects :
Nsis.A allows hackers to get into and carry out dangerous actions in affected computers, such as capturing screenshots, stealing personal data, etc.

Means of transmission
Nsis.A does not spread automatically using its own means. It needs the attacking user's intervention in order to reach the affected computer.

NSIS can also be adware.

You won't have this problem if you stick to legit software

Just to clarify the only two instances of the icon showing up was a version of mumble and a nightdev addon for obs. Both of which are mainstream programs from their original sites.

You giving this advice without enough context? That isn't wise. I was only asking if NSIS is a virus or repuable installer maker.
