I have been using free AVG or Avast antivirus software for the past 25 years. With increased security threats in the world, I wonder if I am borrowing trouble by not using a more extensive version of a "purchased" software? Could you shed some light on this? I have always been careful not to open suspicious or random unknown websites and emails and to date have never had a big problem. What do you think?

I have been using free Microsoft Securities Essentials and Malwarebytes for many, many years with no issues. The main thing is to keep both the pgm and the signatures updated. However, If you have super sensitive corporate files you are protecting, then free may not be the best solution.
