My sister has a hp pavilion dv-2000 laptop. Yesterday evening I playfully inserted a pen's nip in it's provided expansion port which resulted in some amusing sparking. This followed with the screen going black.

Later analysis showed that none of the keys were working, usb ports were not working, external monitor was also black.

I diagnosed that the motherboard is fried, but I am not sure. Please tell me how to be sure what has happened, also give possible solutions.

Hi, the power light on the laptop is on, do you hear the fan, do you hear the hard drive, if nothing works, then yes your motherboard is fried.

not quite so amusing now that you most likely need to buy her another one is it?

unless its an expensive laptop its probably cheaper to buy new seeing as how its likely a $200-300 fix if its a fried motherboard and you take it to a shop.
