Is this laptop good?

Hello,
I need an second opinion on a laptop I'm looking at purchasing. I'm not hardware expert so I could really use your help.

Now the biggest thing that annoys me about this laptop is the screen resolution. It has a Blu-Ray player but its not Full HD, maximum resolution 1366 x 768, supports 720p. I can probably purchase this laptop at around $1800 AUD. My budget is $2000.

My main use is word processing, playing video games, watching movies/tv shows. Is their anything better out there that you could recommend?

It will do all that you want just fine. it just seems overpriced to me. Maybe I'm just used to prices in the US and the difference in conversion rate is throwing me off. Do you have any other online retailers you are looking at? I may be able to pull something from there for you to look at.

It retails here for $1900. The difference between USD and AUD is hardly anything anymore.. but it doesn't stop retailers from charging whatever they want. 4 other retailers have this at $1893-1899 but with bargaining can drop an easy $100-$150 with silly things thrown in like free carry bag and anti virus. From the Toshiba AU website its listed as $1900 retail.

What type of gamer are you and what games will you be wanting to run on your new laptop?

Acer Aspire AS5740G-334G64Mn A$899 Core i3 330 / 4GB / 640GB HDD / 15.6" 1366 x 768 LCD / HD 5650 Mobility Radeon / HDMI
The HD 5650 is a pretty good step-up in gaming ability over the GT330M of the more expensive laptop you listed. It will 'game better' in spite of the slower dual core CPU vs the A$1900 laptop's faster dual core CPU.
I personally can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080i. Is a Blu-Ray player a hard requirement? What about adding an external Blu-Ray player for those times you have a Blu-Ray disk to play?

Except for not having the Blu-Ray player this would be the better gaming laptop vs the Qosmio F60.

I can get that $1800 Acer for $1586 AUD.
Blu-Ray isn't a requirement.

The Acer has a bigger HDD, more ram, faster GFX card and significantly cheaper.
The Toshiba has better processor, and Blu-Ray.

Thanks for the help I think the Acer is a much better option.

I can get this for $1568 AUD as well.

Faster Processor (Quad Core 1.6Ghz), less ram, HD 5730M instead of 5650.

The ASUS N61JQ does look like a better deal. Core i7 720QM (1.6Ghz - Turbo Mode 2.8GHz) and HD 5730M.
The difference between 5650 and 5730 is something like 13023 / 14025 scores in 3DMark 05 or 33fps /41fps in CoD MW2 (high).
And it looks like the ASUS N61 is generally considered to be a good laptop. Asus N61JQ Owners Lounge

Passmark CPU benchmark scores:
Core i5 M 520 @ 2.40GHz = 2131
Core i7 720QM @ 1.60GHz = 3239
That's a nice bump up in CPU processing power (if your programs can make good use of all four cores).

^I agree. The Asus is the better deal. Better specs and I generally feel that Asus has better build quality than Acer. Acer laptops have always felt cheap and flimsy to me.
