He was suing facebook because "..the company did not respond to his requests to have threatening comments removed." The second paragraph above saying "Jack Thompson is suing social networking site Facebook for allowing users to post threatening messages.." is inaccurate and misleading.

And, of course, a lot of people here are not thinking and were easily misled.

Whatever he may be, chicken, chihuahua, muckraker or whatever you righteous good people like to call him, he also has his rights.

While jack Thompson maybe annoying, and get on a lot of peoples nerves. It does not justify people forming hate groups.

People now think it is normal to spam hate and vitriol at anyone, and it makes me wonder what kind of society we are becoming where this kind of negative and ultimately self destroying behaviour is just common place.

Facebook should close these types of groups down, If people were creating groups that countered his arguments then fine, people do have the right to free speech after all, but personal attacks, spreading of hate can only lead to a worse society. You only have to look how this hatred is used by religious groups and the blood baths that ensue to see how it impacts on society.

Does he deserve 120 Million, NO does he deserver to have personal and hateful groups aimed at him removed YES

Your missing the point, this is not freedom of speech, it is incitement to hate and completely different, if someone started a group saying kill all Muslims it would be banned, if someone started saying kill all black people it would be banned, but because it is an individual who has a different viewpoint to yourself and others (me included btw) it is alright to to incite hate and violence towards him.

You can't have dual standards, either something is right or something is wrong, he asked for the hate messages against him to be removed and they should of been, perpetuating a stream of hate an violence towards someone just because they have a different view point is wrong, end of story. Or doesn't he have the wonderful right to freedom of speech you claim is given to all?

Yes, facebook should follow his request of taking down the group. It's directly attacking him in a personal way. I don't agree with the lawsuit and I do think he's a freaking idiot with every other insult possible. If facebook would have taken down the group already, the lawsuit would probably not have happened, probably. We are talking about JT afterall...

I see what you are saying, it is a borderline case of what is right and wrong:

Groups of people inciting hate towards Muslims etc will attract very radical people prepared to actually carry out that violence. (this is a conflict already involving a Lot of killing)

Groups of (kids mostly) people angry at Jack will enjoy a rant, but as a group are very unlikely to contain people who are going to kill the dude.

As such I think to tell people they cannot vent their frustrations at this idiot in a website that he does not have to visit, would simply be curtailing freespeech - blocking them from such a freedom (perceived as Jack winning a pretty crushing blow against freedom of speech) might make people feel So frustrated that they might even consider some kinda action (hopefully not of course)

Jack wanting to sue people and ban types of games (actively trying to obstruct freedom to play a type of game that is common, or trying to part a company/people of Huge sums of money) is not a matter of freedom of his speech -- he has taken steps to cause harm of sorts, the website does not.


Arguably that website might have even saved his life allowing some crazed idiot to vent his frustrations some and go away feeling happier rather than plotting action and following through...

Saying he should be smacked across the face with an Atari, is not the same as saying "All Muslims Should Die". I would bet that most of the comments are made in jest, with no actual intention of harming the man.. more just spouting frustration with his controversial views.

If someone was posting "We should hunt down Jack Thompson and burn an effigy in his lawn, then drag him behind a truck", I could see him having a case here. However, if the most harmful statement is "Jack Thompson should be smacked across the face with an Atari 2600.", then I'm sorry, that is not a death threat, nor would anyone really take it seriously.

I would honestly laugh if someone told me that I should be smacked with an Atari. Or if someone said that since I'm not a big fan of social networking sites that "Eccentric should be forced to stare at Facebook until his eyes bleed", I would laugh and not take it seriously.

Now if people were showing up at Jack's house with pitchforks and torches, stemming from plans they made through a Facebook group.. he might have a case or point here. Otherwise, this is nothing at all like a death threat against the PotUS or anyone else for that matter.
