If you bought it off craiglists and didn't even try it to see that there is a password, or the seller didn't give you a password and now won't answer any requests for it, then you just bought a stolen laptop.

I mean, come, who buys a laptop and doesn't see it work and realize there is a password that the seller doesn't know.

you could just install a whole fresh Windows or Linux. you only bought the hardware. that's always my default assumption when i buy a used computer - i'm getting the hardware only and ALWAYS doing a fresh install of whatever OS i want on it. the ONLY exception was my laptop which was bought used from the Dell store - so that was legit and clean.
