Keyboard shift button + letter highlights letters instead of capitalising.

I have a new HP Envy 15-ae109na laptop. After only a couple of months, I have a keyboard issue. Every time I press the shift button to capitalise a letter, it highlights all thosev letters in the document, and the cursor jumps to one of those. Makes it virtually impossible to type, This happens in all apps, so I guess it's a keyboard configuration issue.Help!

I have no way to send you a screen shot as that isn't in my system. Did you reboot the computer between turning it off and checking on the problem again?

Hi. Yes, I did reboot. I can't follow your sequence, as nothing happens when I hold right shift for 8 secs! I assumed that was because I had unchecked everything in the Ease of Access menu? Otherwise, how do I get into Filterkey settings?

Your laptop may not use the F8. You should be able to get to it by going to "Start" and type "Filter" into the search box and it should give you the option of "Ignore repeated keystrokes using FilterKeys". Click that.

Thanks for that explanation. Tried clicking that, but still no change. It's as if somehow the shift key has been programmed to do this!

The "Turn on Filter Keys" one should be turned off.

I am out of ideas. These options should have resolved the issue, which makes me wonder if the problem is something else on the device. Have you tried running it in "Safe Mode" to see if you get the same problem then?

How to enter "Safe Mode" when booting the computer.

In Windows 8 and 10...

As your computer restarts, press F8 (possibly a few times) to enter "Safe Mode"

a. Press the "F4" key to Enable "Safe Mode".
(The computer will then start in "Safe Mode" with a minimal set of drivers and services.)

b. Press the "F5" key to Enable "Safe Mode" with Networking.
( Once "Safe Mode" with Networking starts, Windows is in Safe Mode, with additional network and services for accessing the Internet and other computers on your network.)

c. Press the "F6" key to Enable "Safe Mode" with Command Prompt.
(In "Safe Mode" with "Command Prompt" starts Windows in Safe Mode, with a Command Prompt window instead of the Windows interface. This option is mostly only used by IT professionals.)

Now sign in to the computer with your account name and password. (If you have one set.) When you are finished troubleshooting, you can exit "Safe Mode" restarting your computer.


In Windows 7/Vista/XP...

1. Immediately after turning on the computer, or restarting it (usually after you hear your computer beep), tap the F8 key, repeatedly, in 1 second intervals.

2. The computer will then display hardware information and run a memory test.

3. Next the "Advanced Boot Options" menu will appear.

4. In the "Advanced Boot Options" menu use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking" and press ENTER.
