Just swapped out the hard drive on an old laptop of mine from 2008-09. The specs are decent but the HHD was in poor shape. I replaced it with an SSD and booted. Previously I had accidentally got canned air in the out-take? vent for the cpu. Psensor show the temperatures to be a little high (running linux at the moment) but not too outrageous (80+). Any suggestions? I had hoped to fix this into a usable machine but I'm not sure about it if the fan won't spin. Thanks

Shooting more canned air!!?? You sure?? How would I check if it's plugged in without taking it completely apart? How do I know if it's bad? Is there some software that can check it for me?

Also, my pc claims to have zero battery despite being plugged in with the battery in as well. Maybe its just old idk.

if your battery reports 0% when plugged in, it usually means your battery is bad.

yes shoot more air in, maybe some dust is blocking it, and preventing it from spinning. you wont hurt anything, considering the fan isnt spinning at all.

and yes, youd have to disassemble the unit to see if the fan is still connected.

Never mind about the battery I took it out then put it back in and it works. Gonna see what to do about the fan. Is 40-55ish C okay on idle? It seems a little high to me. When installing some updates it went over 60... Leaving it off for now till I work something out.

Yeah, I haven't tried doing anything serious. One time during the updates it spiked to 81... I don't know how effective the fan is but seems like it should help somehow...

I tried playing a little with it briefly and it didn't seem to go over 70c at all. However, I still want to get the fan fixed.

This was originally a windows PC, think I'll have any trouble re-installing and activating with it's original code? I'm using the same motherboard.

I shot more canned air in and the fan spins. Seems to do a fairly good job (idle temperature ~ 35 vs 50) but it sounds little strange. Not like its supposed to but at least it works.
