The screen still lights up but the image that is supposed to be there is just black. Very rarely the image flickers and shows the correct image but only for less than a second. Does this mean the problem is the inverter?

External monitors work so I know the problem is not the onboard graphics. Also right before the normal boot startup, it displays "PRESS ESC KEY FOR BOOT MENU", that is the only time when the laptop's display works.

Thanks in advance.

If the problem appears only on the laptop screen, it could be related to one of the following: poor connection between the video cable and motherboard or LCD screen or failed video cable or failed LCD screen. I suggest you take it out to a service center for further diagnose.
