Laptop GPU Scam?

Sorry If this is the wrong section as I am new to this site.. my old laptop runs games like shite tbh but it has a decent cpu and I know the gpu can be upgraded... only problem is idk where to look. I'm trying to find a 980m to stick in my laptop, but all I can find is Ebay and I am scared to buy anything off there after hearing so many fake gpu stories... if somebody could point me in the right direction that would be amazing!

Mobile graphics are not something you can walk into a store and purchase. They're pulled from broken laptops and sold as used on second hand web sites like EBay. You're not going to find anything for sale from sites like Newegg or Amazon.

Trial and error? The only sure way to avoid scams is to not try and upgrade.

I would rather spend 500 dollars on a 980m than over 1000 dollars getting a new laptop 🙁 any tips to buying one? or any tips to spot a fake once I bought it?

Without physically viewing the GPU, there is no way of telling until it's installed and running. I don't know if there are marking on the exterior that identify the chip.
