Laptop Graphic performance seriously decreased when laptop is closed??

I output to an external monitor on my laptop, and can get 60+ fps in most games, but as soon as I close the lid performance instantly drops to about 10fps. Why is this occurring?

(I do not have my laptop set to go to sleep when the lid is closed)

If PC specs are of any interest, I would be happy to answer if anyone asks, I would just really like some help in regards to this issue, which I can't seem to find anywhere else.

Solution

You need to shut of your laptop completely, turn it on while repeatedly pressing F2 (or whatever other key accesses BIOS, such as F12 or DEL) and search for something that says Power Saving Mode and disable it.

Its probably windows, mainly because the CPU or GPU have power save functions and even though sleep mode is disabled the same issue will occur. You could fix this but its just a pain if you want to and it could break your laptop.

So just face the laptop screen away from you, I know this sucks but this is the limits of tech these days.

Effeectt is correct, it's the laptop going into a low-power mode because the lid is closed, you can disable it from BIOS, or do as he says and move it from your face, which is recommended.

Changing a setting or two in the BIOS seems hardly damaging, if I want to save power on my laptop, I'll put it to sleep. Is there any chance you could point me in the right direction (i.e what setting I'm looking for?). I would greatly appreciate it, Thank you.

Thank you, I will test this in a little bit and get back to this thread with some results!

Sadly there was no such option in Lenovo's bios, (There was actually a very limited number of options actually. :L)

I gave their tech support a call, and they're supposed to get back to me within 24/h after trying to replicate the issue on their end. The "tech specialist" suspects that upon closing the lid, it switches to integrated graphics, despite my game/programs/etc being specifically whitelisted inside of nvidia's control panel. However, after the call ended, I opted to run a few more tests. What I did, was measure BF4's fps while settings were high, and it was whitelisted in the Nvidia control panel, and the laptop lid was closed. The results were 10 - 15 FPS. (When the lid is open, on discreet it's about 45 - 60+). I then decided to run the same test while the lid was open, and I told nvidia to specifically use the integrated graphics on battlefield, which resulted in a solid 5 FPS.

So... I can only assume that it's not switching to integrated, but rather bottlenecking the discreet graphics to prevent overheating, or what?

I own a brand new Lenovo Y50 4K, and I can only assume that it's not defective, but this is rather an issue (Or feature? Lel) that affects all other Y50s, so if anyone has any tips while I wait to hear back from Lenovo, I'd be glad to hear them, and I'm sure someone else down the road probably would too. In anycase I'll update the thread with whatever Lenovo supplies.

You're tech support guy sounds correct, as the performance matches. Instead, go to Power Options < What does closing the lid do < Nothing

This isn't the issue, if I didn't have it set to nothing already, my computer would simply go to sleep, and my external monitor would display nothing.

Hello guys/gals...I know its been a while on the thread but anyhow here are my two cents.

Recently I bought myself a Lenovo Y50 and I started noticing the FPS drop as soon as I closed the lid. I already have all power options disabled and this does not solves the issue. The only workaround I found was to completely reboot the machine with the lid closed and never open it up again during my gameplay. This effectly got my 60 FPS back on GTA5 with the lid closed.

Warning: due to Lenovo's design the exhaust are located rigth below the screen, which means that with the closed lid the hot air stays inside the laptop ...Very Bad...I monitored temperatures and both GPU and CPU quickly go over 80C, adding a cooling pad bellow the laptop helped but not as much as I would like that to be. With the lid open temperatures stay bellow 80.

I will for sure try this one! Thanks for sharing.

I do also have Lenovo Y50 70 and 2 weeks ago I bought a new wide screen monitor to extend my gaming plaesure. However, the FPS has drastically dropped and I was about to go crazy since I was not able to locate the problem and cannot create a solution.

Hope this one works!

There is also another solution which I am going to try tonight. Check the best answer in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1763491/extremely-low-fps-monitor.html

I have a Lenovo Y50 UHD with a GTX 960M (and intel integrated graphics). I recently had similar issues when using an external monitor and I found some fixes that worked for me:

1.) When the laptop lid is closed it BLOCKS THE LAPTOP'S EXHAUST VENTS. You'll notice the exhaust vents are in the screen hinge. This is just a design issue with this particular laptop. The computer sucks in cool air from the bottom and expells the hot air through the vents inside the screen hinge and when the lid is closed it blocks these vents and the CPU/GPU cannot cool properly.

2.) In the intel integrated graphics control panel and the Nvidia control panel you need to select 1 display instead of multiple. By default when you hook up an external monitor, it will clone the display, and the GPU will still be working double to generate graphics for the laptop screen even if the lid is closed. You don't notice cause the screen gets turned off when the lid closes but it's still being output to as a display for your GPU. In the intel control panel go to "Multiple Displays" menu and select "Single Display." In the Nvidia control panel in the Manage 3D settings menu, change "Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration" to "Single display performance".

3.) There are also some power settings tweaks in the windows power menu, just change everything to high performance.

4.) Finally the last detail is as usual make sure you have the latest driver from Nvidia, especially if you are using Windows 10 since they are still working out bugs with the new operating system. Hope this helps someone out there!

I just got a Y50, FHD, i7- 4720, 16GB ram, 1TB SSHD & GTX960m with 4GB ( a fast gaming machine with best performance & value for price with great looks to boot), I had some doubts about gaming performance on an external monitor while the lid is closed while researching my purchase (same as you) and HAD the same problem as you do, I can confirm that this is solely due to the design of the exhaust system placement under the lid hinge, and there is no way to work around this, which is slightly inconvenient while gaming, upgrading from an older rig I used for gaming (samsung np-550c with GT650m), but here is what I do and enjoy all my games at maximum possible

1- switch to external monitor display only with fn+f3 key. Which will switch your laptop monitor off, so it will not distact you.
2- switch the keyboard back light off with fn+space, again, no lights to distract you.
3- place your laptop on a good cooling pad just to ensure maximum cooling / performance while gaming with no throttling, I use and recommend the cooler master notepal X3 gaming cooling pad, which I bought specially for this rig. Great silent cooling option with good functionality & value for price
4- Enjoy many hours of great gaming on this great looking, performing & value laptop, and forget about this minor inconvenience,, you made a great choice for a gaming laptop :)

I hope that this would be of help
