Laptop Not Playing Sound

When my MacBook Air laptop is connected to my Asus monitor through the HDMI chord, my laptop won't play sound.

Haven't used a Mac in a bit, but I do know for Windows you have to change the sound display. When I first hook up my monitors, it wants to force the speakers to the monitor, even though it doesn't have any. I have to manually change it to speakers.
