Laptop Optical Drive Broken?

I recently purchased a laptop with no OS. When I tried to boot a Cd from the optical drive, I realized that the drive is not found in the BIOS, however the drive still opens and spins up as a working optical drive would.

After installing Windows and updating the Bios in the laptop, the optical drive is still not recognized by the computer.

Should I replace he Optical drive, or is the motherboard somehow damaged?

Is the drive even plugged in? It will function with only the power cable.

Its a Laptop Optical Drive. It doesn't use any cables.

You will either have to replace the faulty drive or buy a USB external drive...
