Hello all,

I have a question solely based on travel purposes, I travel a bit and was wondering if it's worth the sacrifice or not... Wanted to know anyone else's opinion on it.

So I have a gaming desktop currently, Specs: i7 6700k, 16gb DDR4, Soundblaster Z, 960 Evo NVME ssd, and a 1080 Ti. Monitor is a 144hz 1440p g sync monitor.

My question is, I was thinking on keeping my 1080 Ti, and monitor and selling the rest of my desktop to then buy a decent Alienware laptop + Alienware amplifier(To use the 1080 Ti on the laptop). I would then hook that up to my monitor I have at home, and take the laptop(Also the amplifier if I wanted to) around when I travel. The laptop I was looking at was on amazon for about $1150, has a 970m and a 6700HQ.. I don't really play any intensive games necessarily, I play ESO, D3, and overwatch, and a some BF1.

Now I'm unsure if its worth selling the desktop is worth it or not. I guess my other question is, how would the performance difference be between the 6700k and the 6700HQ?

Any input would be nice, was just a idea

Solution
Purely from the cpu performance point of view... 6700k has base freq. 4GHz, turbo 4.2 and 8MB cache... 6700hq has base freq. 2.6GHz, turbo to 3.5GHz and 6MB cache. I would expect performance drop about 30-40%. I am unsure you'll be able to reach high end framerate in all those titles with such a weakened cpu. CPU intensive games might have issues.

you could buy a laptop with a desktop CPU :)

Solution

Only reason I was considering this idea would be, I really wouldn't be spending anymore money.. Maybe another 200-300. Without my GPU, my tower is worth at about $1400 new.. so I was thinking on trying to sell it for $1100-1200, That alienware is 1150, and the graphic amp is another 200..

But, as the performance hit is pretty high, I think i'll either make a portable ITX build or just keep this and buy some lower tier laptop for my needs.

Thanks guys :)
