Laptop Resolution Issue With 4K TV

Hi,

I am trying to help my grandparents use a retina MacBook Pro with their new 4K Samsung TV. The issue is that for some reason they can only get 1080P as the max resolution. I think the issue is the HDMI port not supporting a higher resolution. However the TV only has HDMI ports for connecting devices, so does that mean the TV will never actually get the 4K resolution??

It's probably an older version of hdmi so doesn't support 4k unless you lower the hz. If it has thunderbolt or displayport you can use that for 4k but make sure the adapter can support 4k.

model number of the macbook and the 4k tv would help.

Most 4K tv's only have 1 or 2 ports that are fully 4k/60fps certified.

TV is a Samsung UN40JU6500F. The MacBook Pro is a late 2012 Retina 13 inch.

The tv only has hdmi for 4k. But the issue is the hdmi on the mbp. You'll have to use a dp adapter.

Ok. Of course I left my thunderbolt to HDMI adapter at home. Classic.
