Laptop with broken screen won't connect to external display

I'm trying to connect a Toshiba Satellite C50 laptop to an external display through VGA, it originally worked but when I reset the laptop nothing would display on the screen. I've tried everything such as Fn + F4 and ALT + F8 + Power.

Did you try turning off the laptop (off not sleep or hibernate), disconnect the external display. Start it back up, and then shut it down again. Connect the external display and then start it back up. Should resolve it.
