Laptop won't connect to TV...(very inexperienced with technology)

Usually I watch my Netflix through my laptop on my Tv.. I connect it with this hdmi chord. Well I got a new laptop yesterday and just now I hooked it up to my Tv.. it played at first (on tv) but the picture was like really small and then it like flashed between the blue screen and the grey fuzzy staticky looking screen and then just went to blue scree.. I checked the chord by plugging it into the dvd player and it worked. im very upset and confused because I literally have no idea what im doing. Please help me.

You should try setting the laptop display mode to "extend" so your TV is a second screen and set that display output to the native resolution of the TV. Sometimes TVs have a problem "handshaking" with a laptop since the laptop will have to detect the HDMI connection to the TV before it turns that display on. Switching to another active input and back to the laptop is often needed to get it to lock. If you can try the laptop HDMI output on a monitor rather than a TV that would eliminate that as a the problem.
