I currently have a probook running on 2nd generation i5 with a Radeon graphics chip. In early days I would game a lot so needed graphics card but now after 3 and a half years my screen has spots and keyboard has stopping working. Now I'm doing an Msc and require more professional and minimal entertainment use. Is i3 4th generation going to be a good choice for me or should I go i5?

What kind of professional use are we talking about? Just text editing, spreadsheets, presentations are not going to require much CPU power.

Anyway, the difference between Core i3 and i5 on laptops is not huge. Mainly the i3 models do not have turbo boost, so they are stuck at the lower basic clock frequency, while the i5 models can boost up to higher clocks as long as temperatures allow.
