Largest Pata drive I can use in c840 latitude?

What is the Largest PATA Hard Drive I can use in a Dell Latitude c840 With XP SP2? Are should I limit the time I run this machine? I have had two drives that have failed so far. Are is just WD Scorpio Blue 250 Gig Pata drive a bad drive? They booted fine and formatted loaded. Then thats all folks?

you may have just gotten 2 bum drives. check ebay you can get 320GB drives for about $100
