Just a question, what would happen if I get caught stealing a DVD, can I get a 150000$ fine ? I steal IP (like the torrent downloaders) and some plastic, paper, ink... shouldn't I have a more serious bill ? (in some kind of perfect, or just consistent and coherent world perhaps). Lawyers should think of it, because they are missing their duty. I am an IT, and look at the things this way, but I just can't admire lawyers enough. If IT people had half of social habilities, IT people would get a 3% of every invoice a computer prints, etc... Computers would have 4 buttons (like PS controllers): if you need an invoice, get an specially skilled person and pay $$$ for this job (just like a comissioner's giving faith job)

Wecome to capitalism. Where individuals are limited to sue companies, but companies are more then free to sue people for as much as they want.
Nice extortion gig going on, porn corporations gotta get their share of the middle class too. haha.

steal it from walmart, its about a 1000$ fine, and 1 month jail at most.
pirate it, and its a 150000$ fine mimimum i believe up to 250000 per offense and 1 year minimum to 5 year max, not sure if its per offense, or if its per court case.

and dont get me wrong, with the walmart you are looking at 1-4 days jail minimum, with the pirateing, you get no jail time unless you cant pay (who can) and than you get the 5 years.

see the law for stealing from walmart is a misdemeanor i believe, and is regarded as a solo act.
pirateing it and you are looking at a felony and are lumped in with organized crime.

I know a solution. set a max cash value that the company is looking for in damages, when the person is found innocent that amount is awarded to the defendant including what ever legal fees the defendant incurred.

So in this case if they meant 150,000 and she was found innocent she would get 150,000 plus what ever it cost for help :) then she could also do a counter lawsuit for damages since they payout is just the cost of laying lawsuits against an individual from a business account.

The thing that these suits don't take into account are the grandmas like this, and the people out there smart enough to crack WEP. Its never 100% that the person owning the connection is actually doing the downloading, these people should stop treating it like a loaded gun.

Has anything gone right with this kind of news? I haven't seen any news involving the internet and US law enforcement, or law in general that didn't involve burning a bunch of innocent people?

"The accused grandmother said the firm sent her a letter emphasizing that copyright owners can receive up to $150,000 in damages per infringing file."

A awesome reply would have been a letter pointing out that extortion can get you raped up the ass by Bubba in the pen. Honestly, it's going to have to get to "RIAA shysters get sent to PMITA prison" before this shit stops.

Isn't extortion a federal crime, because that is extortion... plain and simple. Is not different that organized crime groups making a threat if a payment of money isn't delivered.

Behold dear World, the wonders of America! Where healthcare, education and the law are mere industries without even the pretensions that it's there for the people's benefit. It's all just making money, at the cost of gross disservice to the taxpayers.

If this is what they call the American way then they can shove it. Careful..don't wanna be labelled a potential terrorist by Obama's new Pentagon Propaganda force (operation: 'Social Media in Strategic Communication'), for the crime of having a free thought in my head that may lead others astray.

No, wait, it makes perfect sense! Who would suspect a little-old-lady of committing such heinous and anarchistic crimes as illegally downloading porn and smuggling a bomb onto an airplane? But no, the RIAA/MPAA, and the TSA know better! Apparently no one remembers Cloak and Dagger...

If you download a movie on the internet while it is in theaters the fine should be whatever percentage they receive from the $10-12 movie ticket. If you download a dvd or blu-ray released movie then the fine should be twice the amount to purchase the movie and you get a copy of the movie at the end of the deal.
