I am entering a computer science course by next month, and I will continue into software development. The course will reward me with a bachelor degree and will last for 3 years. Also should I upgrade to Windows 7, and if so which version (i.e. Home Premium, Ultimate, Professional, etc.).

Huh? Why do you need 7 Pro to run VM's? Unless you mean XP Mode.

OP - If you're going to be running a hypervisor to develop on different platforms then MS Virtual PC is not the way to go. Virtual Box and VMware Player are both free and will run quite happily on 7 Home Premium, the only advantage of Pro would be the higher memory limit, but I doubt you're going to need more then 16GB for your course.

I know XP Mode is a VM but it's limited to using Virtual PC and as a hypervisor Virtual PC is way behind the times.
