I've been looking around for a good DSLR camera, but really don't know what to get. I don't know much about them, but I know a bit. So i would like a more informed opinion. Ive been looking at the Canon 1200D, Canon 700D, Nikon D3300, Nikon D5300. They all vary in price and all have different features. At the moment I'm more keen on buying the Nikon 5300 but the thing is is it worth the price. Reason I'm thinking about the Nikon D5300 is because I've seen the reviews of each camera and even videos of them going head to head, and it all points at that one. Yes i know all the ones I've seen are the latest versions, which comes to my next question, are there any big differences between the latest models and the newer ones?

Also, can someone tell me the difference between a 18-55 mm Telephoto Zoom Lens and a 18-55mm VR II Compact Lens. They both the same size, so want to know if they both function as well as eachother.

Thank You.

You may find this to be an interesting read - http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/difference-between-nikon-vr-and-vr-ii/
It appears as though the VR II is a newer version of the lens and there are some differences between which are explained in the link above.
"Summary:
1. The Nikon VR zooming mechanism “creeps” while the VR II had improved on this. The Nikon VR II does not get out of zooming position easily by creeping.
2. The Nikon VR has 3 stops...

The D5300 is a great choice, I have a D5200 and it's perfect for me. And the more expensive of those two lens would be better, but assuming you're only just getting into photography you probably don't need the most expensive lens possible. The 700D is also good if you prefer Canon, but the Nikons are better value in my opinion. Make sure the lenses you buy are compatible with the camera you choose. :)

Thanks for your reply. Reason i asked about the lens is because there are two places that sell it for a good price but one of them has on lens the other has the other one. So just wanted to know which would be best. Thanks tho.

3. VR is the earlier implementation of Nikon’s vibration reduction technology and it is later improved by the release of VR II.
4. The VR II has better image quality than the earlier Nikon VR.
5. VR II is naturally more expensive than the VR."

I hope that helps.
