Hey guys,

I'm looking for the best gaming headset with or without a mic. Also should I get a sound card with the headset or would an amp be just fine ??? maybe both ??

Sorry I'm not the greatest with computer's I just love my video games :)

I can spend up to around the $350 range as a bundle or even just on the headset if it's worth it.

Thanks in advanced !

Solution
They have a fairly low impedance of 42ohms so an amp wouldn't be needed to drive them. A soundcard is just a DAC with possibly a virtual surround sound software. It will not affect the bass assuming your onboard DAC is decent.

If you wanted to hear more bass you could play around with your equalizer and mimic a bass booster preset.

Yes, your basically paying for the name. If your looking for the actual quality, check out the headsets below.

Sennheiser G4ME ZERO - http://en-ca.sennheiser.com/g4me-zero

Sennheiser G4ME ONE - http://en-ca.sennheiser.com/g4me-one

Sennheiser PC 363D - http://en-ca.sennheiser.com/gaming-headset-pc-363d

Creative EVO ZxR - http://us.creative.com/p/gaming-headsets/sound-blaster-evo-zxr

Audio Technica and the Astro gaming headsets are also worth looking at, but if your looking for the best quality (sound and mic) overall you should look at headphones and a external/modmic.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply's !! I've been looking at some review's also and came upon these http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00NLIXGQ8/ref=dra_a_rv_lb_hn_it_P1300_1000?tag=dradisplay0c-20&ascsubtag=4a251a2ef9bbf4ccc35f97aba2c9cbda.

I don't expect anything from the mic or amp but it comes as a combo. I've only read amazing thing's about Audio Technica and especially these one's. Thought's ?

The M50's are pretty poor for gaming. Soundstage is small. That Fiio amp is for portable use and wouldn't be needed anyway.

Look at the Sennheiser HD 558's and grab the mic in the combo for a cheap option; it's a Zalman clip-on mic. You could also go for the Antlion Modmic.

For something better but more expensive, look at the AKG Q701's or K7XX (on Massdrop currently). These will likely need an amp for enough volume, so something cheap like a Fiio E10K would a good purchase. Then grab a mic.

The Fiio ampwill help with the audio, and the zalman clip-on mic is actually pretty decent. But id like to point out that the combo is currently unavailable.

The Audio Technica ATH-M50x is a great sounding and looking headphones. I say go with it, also comparable to it is the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro

Audio Technica ATH-M50x (no amp and mic) - http://www.amazon.ca/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422747855&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+technica

Hey guys I was debating between the Sennheiser HD 558's or the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional with the Blue Microphones SnowBall iCE USB Microphone. I'm just doing this for gaming plus skype to talk to team mates.

Would a amp or sound card boost the sound quality a lot or no ??

Also I heard great thing's about the blue snowball mic but I couldn't find if it picked up a lot of background noice ??

edit: I'm still open to suggestions :)

The m50x and Hd 558 are completely different sounding pairs of headphones.

The m50x is closed back, more rugged and portable, has pleather ear pads, and has a greater clamping force. It provides accurate, detailed, and powerful audio. Listening to it you can tell these were made to monitor but it still works well for listening to music. For gaming, not so much. Especially if you game for long periods the clamping force can become unbearable and the earpads will get hot and sweaty. Also the soft pleather earpads harden over time so keep that in mind.

The HD 558s are open back, use velour earpads (very comfortable), lightweight, and will also have a much wider soundstage which makes it the better choice for gaming. However since it's open back its bass won't be as powerful and punchy as the m50x. Sound wise it is smooth, neutral, and natural.

Keep in mind the pros and cons of closed vs open back headphones.

An AMP would allow you to drive the headphones to higher volumes with less distortion. It shouldn't be needed since both of these headphones are low impedance. A soundcard acts as a DAC which you may benefit from depending on whether or not it will be an upgrade from your onboard DAC. Also some soundcards have surround sound software that might be worth looking into.

For up to $350 you have some really great choices available, but I recommend going out and trying a few high end headphones before buying them to find the sound signature which best suites you.

Yeah, its true that it clamps pretty hard- that is if you don't break them in. The Blue Snowball is a great mic (I own it, its not the iCE though). It doesnt really pick up too much background noise so don't worry, just make sure stuff in the background is not too loud.

Interesting thing's to take into consideration !! I live in a pretty big city and I can't really think of any places that have demo for headset's so it's almost impossible to test out high end headphone's :(

You don't have a Guitar Center or Bestbuy nearby? If your Bestbuy has a Magnolia section it's likely they'll have the Sennheiser HD series and a few other high end headphones on demo. In Guitar Center anything that's in stock is fair game since you can ask to demo it.

Where do you live? If you live in Canada there is no Guitar Center and Best Buys don't have demos. Also check if you have a nearby NCIX, my closest NCIX has lots of demos like the Sennheiser HD 558 and Audio Technica ATH-M50x.

Also check your NCIX for deals, they usually have pretty crazy deals, I saved about $60 on my headphones.
