Looking for a laptop for school work/web browsing

So I've never owned a laptop and looking for suggestions on what kind is best for what's described in the the thread title.

I'm not looking to break the bank, 400$ is the range I would like to stay in.

A basic core i3 system should be more then enough power for you then.

What are you studying in school as that might change what is advised for you?

Toshiba and Lenovo may have something to suit your needs at that price, unless school involves video editing or heavy 3D graphics rendering

My plan is to major in Computer Engineering but as of right now I'm currently in the military so I was going to do basic classes to get started.
