It depends on how old the receiver is.
If the receiver doesn't have HDMI then connect all your sources to the TV directly. Connect the digital audio output of the TV to the receiver. Check the TV manual on how to turn on and configure the audio output. You may also have to turn the TV speakers off in the same menu.
If the receiver doesn't have digital inputs and the TV doesn't have analog audio or headphone out then you will need a digital to analog converter connected to the TV digital audio output.
