Low USB 3.0 transfer speed on Asus N550JK

It's been bugging me for some time, but my transfer speeds when using USB 3.0 hard drives are the same when using 2.0, they go max ~ 30 MB/s. I didn't have any USB 3.0 controller installed, so I installed one which didn't help at all. It was the only one I was able to install.

So my device manager should have a controller listed but it looks like this

I've disabled the suspect settings in power options, nothing there. And I don't have the option in BIOS to enable XHCI. I've tested on multiple USB 2.0 and 3.0 drives. Please help

try updating those two drivers.

What hard drives are you using? Would like to see what they advertise for transfer speeds. Also if you are transferring from one USB HDD to another USB HDD it could be the write speed is only around 30 MB/s. You can only transfer as much as ones ability to write the data.

If you're running Windows 8(.1) as the computer initially comes with from Asus' factory, then the driver is native to Windows; you should not need a separate driver for the USB 3.0 controller.

Are you seeing this problem on any and all USB 3.0 devices? Or just one (maybe two)? And is it a new issue, or has it been this way since you first started using the laptop?

Also: 30 MB/s is way too slow for USB 2.0, even.

The second one didn't work before, will try the first one

One USB to another USB is like <20 MB/s

Happens with all drives, and I installed win 8.1, it was OS free. Ands it's day 1 problem

What kind of data are you transferring? Large sequential files or large volumes of smaller files? Depending on which one your transfer rates can definitely take a hit. Also not all drives are created equally so finding out which drive you are using will be helpful.

Happens when I'm transferring a few GB files as well when I'm transferring 700 MB files.

Even with that I think I should be getting higher speeds. I don't have a USB 3.0 controller in device manager no matter what I install is whats getting on my nerves the most. And ofc the same speeds on 2.0 and 3.0

Do you happen to have an SSD that you can use for testing? If you can hook up a hard drive or flash drive which you know should have a read or write speed greater than USB 2.0 can support (I think it's somewhere near 40 MB/s) you can test whether or not your USB 3.0 port is working correctly.

Maybe try one of the following HDD speed test tools https/www.raymond.cc/blog/measure-actual-hard-disk-perfomance-under-windows/ I don't know how they actually work but if you test your HDD read speed and it's coming up maxed out around 40 while connected to USB 2.0 and it is higher than that when connected to USB 3.0 I would think that proves your USB 3.0 port to be working fine. Again I'm not sure how the tests work so this may or may not be a good way to test.

I have no SSD to test

I used CrystalDiskMArk and here are the results. I've got 3x3.0 ports, no 2.0 ones.
Tested 2 HDD's, one is a 320 GB WD Blue

and the other is 1TB My Passport Ultra.

Compared to the same test with the same drive seems my 3.0 port is not working as it should (in sequential). And a small note, the HDD in the other test is empty, dunno if that affects performance, don't think it should

In the end after hours of googling I was able to figure what was wrong. When I was in BIOS I just ignored the XHCI Pre-boot mode which was disabled and enabling it solved the issue. Stupid thing
