M700 Boot problems

We recently acquired a Compaq Armada M700 PII 366 mhz laptop that has
started having a boot up problem.

At power on the Num lock, Caps lock, and scroll lock lights come on. The
hard drive or power light does not come on. Fan is not working either.
Pretty much dead. This can happen with the battery or power cord attached.

Any ideas at what to check?

Change the CMOS (RTC) battery.

I have a M700 here with similar symptoms. I already tried changing the
CMOS battery - to no avail. From what I can gather, a common fault on
these machines is the DC-DC voltage board ....

If you're in the USA, you can get one for $20 + post.
For us lot in the UK, shipping would make that probably $50 - a deal
killer :-/

I am monitoring the time display on the M700. I does appear to lose about a
1 - 2 seconds per hour, will know better tomorrow morning.
CMOS battery is a suspect here.

Where did you get your replacement battery from? Can't seem to locate.

Its a while ago now, but ISTR its just a CR2032 ... no ?
I just kludged it by soldering onto the surface of the button cell (I
think there's a reason you're not meant to do that) - it worked OK as a
battery, but may suffer corrosion or some such ... anyway it didn't
solve my problem.

Something funky is going on with the laptop time display. At 3:30am I
synched the laptop time with my watch to the second.
It appeared to have lost about 1 minute over a 12 hour period.
I check the time 5 hours later and it had fallen behind by 17 seconds. An
hour and a half later it made up time and was only back 5 seconds.
8 hours into this and it has fallen to 10 seconds back. Not sure how
accurate the display clock is.

BTW - I am doing this on battery only - no AC this test.

Any ideas?
