We have a MacBook Pro Mid-2012 15" with a broken Wi-Fi card and the only other non-functioning MacBook is a MacBook Pro Late-2011 17" with a broken screen. Would it be wise to take the Wi-Fi card out of the 17" and put it into the 15" MacBook to see if it works or is it just a waste of time because of incompatibilities? I'm not sure how good MacBooks are with using different models' hardware but I'm guessing much worse than PCs.

Thanks in advance for replies :)

Solution
One antenna is used for Bluetooth. The additional antenna in the 2012 model could be for added MIMO functionality. Apple never mentions the specific network features in the specifications. It only specifies the broad standard: IEEE 802.11n.

Hi thanks for the reply :) yeah the look really similar but I've had issues with apple where certain hardware components just refuse to work even though they should! I'll give it a go on Monday to check!

I opened them up and the 2012 model has 3 antennae but the 2012 has only 2. Does this mean one of the antennae does the job of 2 of the others? Thanks

Ah thanks for clearing that up I looked everywhere online and found no information! I will just buy a wifi card from iFixit for £35.16 and use that one! Thanks again!

In the end I got a wifi cable from a 17 inch model and rammed it in and it still works xD
