MacBook Pro Retina 13" Performance vs Surface Pro 3

I was wondering how comparable is the performance of the i5 cpu you find on the MacBook Pro Retina 13" to the i3 found on the SP3. I will mostly use my machine for note taking,web browsing,movies,music, and using office as well as some light programming.

For 2D apps that i5 will suffice . Even old games and some new titles can be run on its iGPU . But dont expect too much - only on HD resolution . i have a laptop with Core i3 2.3GHz so i can figure it out . For gaming you need Geforce 840M at least and better and GTX 870/860 within the budget . Kinda :

I didn't mention gaming at all in my question. My question was how comparable the performance of the i5 chip in the macbook pro retina 13"(2014), is in relation to the i3 chip in the SP3 considering I will be doing the tasks mentioned above. So in plain terms how faster is the macbook pro retina 13", or how slower is the SP3?

i5 4308U vs i3 4020Y
the i5 with Intel Iris 5100 is about 2x faster than i3 4020Y in both 2D and 3D applcations .

I would say the difference is not that much. I would get the sp3 as it will be cheaper and should be able to handle light programming with ease. The mac will be too expensive for your needs in my opinion.
