Making one good Epson 870 from two

I haven't sent my printer to heaven yet, but it is in purgatory.

Has anyone ever sent an Epson printer back and had the service center
put heads in, if so how did you do it and how expensive was it?

As many of you know, I have an Epson 870 with a hopelessly clogged
black head. It started out just clogged now it doesn't print
anything, nothing. I bought this printer to replace another 870 that
somehow got crunched pins on the color cart. Is it impossibly hard to
take the head from one printer to the other. Anyone ever done it and
willing to shard the step by step?

As much as I want to just use a service for printing, my wife wants a
printer, not that she uses it, but she like what we can do with it,
and so do I, as stupidly expensive as it might be.

Any ideas on the head swap?

Have you tried soaking the heads with windex for a day and then seeing if it
works....To do this leave the printer plugged in and open the lid letting
the heads move to the center. Apply 3-4 drops of windex in the head docking
area on the felt pad. Close the lid and let it soak overnight. Then run the
head cleaning utility and see if that clears things up for you. You may have
to do it twice but it always works on my Epson 1270 photo printer....

Thanks Tim for you reply, I need to be shot if I buy another Epson
printer.

Well things have gone from bad to worse, it started out that the black
was printer very badly and then went to a blank page but after a
number of cleaning the color was somewhat clear. Now niether work ot
all, nothing, the head looks and sounds like it is working but doesn't
print anything.
I am confused. Do you mean the pads that are all the way to the
right or the pads that are in the middle? My heads didn't move when I
opened the lid but I can move them by pushing the orange button.

I appreciate your help, but I think this is just hopeless, and you
know it isn't like I left the printer for months, it was about a week
and a 1/2, two weeks tops. I have said it so many times, but I mean
it this time, I am not spending another penny on Epson anything.

So you have a printer that has problems that's what, four years old, so you
blame the manufacturer? You haven't even sent it in to be fixed. You
expect a lot. Our extended family has 3 variations of this printer
(870-1270-875), all work fine and have since they were new, in regular use.
My 3000 is 8 years old now, works great though it sometimes sits unused for
months. Good luck finding an inkjet that lasts forever.

If it is anything like the 820 photo, I removed the carts, the little 'lids'
that swing down over the carts. Next, I removed the two screws in the bottom
of the carriage/head. Unsnap the white plastic cable covers. The cables will
pull out. Lift the carriage out. You can now clean the heads. Put it back
together and run some cleaning cycles. It should be good for a couple weeks

Thanks for you reply John. I don't see that exactly, I do see two
screws on the outside of the cart holders that look like they allow
it to be taken out, but not sure if that will do it. And not sure
what to do one I get it all out?

Epson's I've been inside follow the same basic build design.

I've managed to repair my old Epson 460 by using the techniques on those

Actually it is less than a year old, I have had two of these in 3
years. I have had 6 Epsons over the last 10 years and in my opinion
the only one that was built to last was my original Epspon. Epson is
a big company, they can take a little well justified critism, I
shouldn't think that not printing for a week should make any printer
totally useless.

Thanks for the reply. It looks pretty scary, but right now it is just
taking up space so I will probably give it a try, I don't hold out
much hope for a speed recovery.

I looked through my list of service manuals and unfortunately
the 870 is one of the few models I don't have. But it is possible
to change/switch print heads on this printer. If you post a request
for the 870 service manual on alt.binaries.e-book.technical I'm
sure someone will help.
