Making S-video work

Hi Gang,

I have a A31p ThinkPad. I can't find my Svideo cable that supposedly
came with it, but have one from my Dell Inspiron 3800. Anyway, I
can't it to work. On the other hand, my TV does not have an Svideo
input. I've been trying to make it work with adaptors that mate it to
the ordinary screw/push-on TV cable plugin, but no go. The Dell cable
does not have as many pins as the female on the back of the A31p, and
I wonder whether it's compatible. I have set up the A31p so that it
is supposedly sending signal to the LCD and TV at the same time.

I know this is a wide open inquiry, but can anyone get me started on
what I should be looking for? Appreciate any and all questions and
suggestions. TIA.

The screw on adapter on your tv is rf only. That means you can connect cable
or antenna to it but not video.

You can use any standard Svideo cable purchased from anywhere. I
bought one for $3 from a grocery store. Harder to find but also needed
in your case is an "rf modulator" to convert the signal to an rf
signal your TV can use as channel 3 or 4 usually. Radio shack,
Wal-mart, many discount stores have them for around $20.

Use your thinkpad's "Presentation Director" to set it up the easiest
way. It'll walk you through everything, although if it doesn't seem to
work at first, play with it a while. You'll see once you start.

Remember that the Svideo cable is just the video. If you want to send
the sound too, you'll need something commonly called an "MP3 cable"
which is just a cable with a small stereo plug on one end for the
thinkpad and two banana plugs on the other end that plug in the rf
modulator. This one is a little harder to find but common where
walkmans and small audio players are sold.

One other bit: The screen resolution on the Thinkpad has to be set
down to something like 640x480 or around to send Svideo on older
Thinkpads and IBM probably hasn't changed it on yours. (I don't
remember the exact setting but Presentation Director takes care of
that) If your Thinkpad screen is still nice and sharp like normal, it
won't work and you won't know why. After you're done sending video,
Presentation Director will set it back to normal for you too.

If you live near a RadioShack electronics shop you can get an adaptor
that will have a sVideo that plugs into your laptop, and an RCA video
connector on the other side. This will allow you to plug into a TV or a
VCR that also has RCA jacks. The other thing you would have to do is
purchase a cable that will plug into your laptop headphone jacks and
have RCA jacks on the other end so you can get the audio output to the
TV (or stereo/home theatre system). It will sound much better.

HTH.

Thanks very much. I'll have a look at Radio Shack.
