memory card error--camera not recognized by computer

All of a sudden I am getting "memory card error" messages when trying to connect camera to computer to download photos. My computer is not recognizing the camera and I don't know how to reinstall at this point.

Oops. Meant to say I have a Canon Elph 150 IS camera. I am also getting a message that the USB device is not working properly. Does that mean the cord is damaged, or does that refer to my camera itself?
