My friend gave me his Lenovo IdeaPad N585 because it was full of viruses and he couldn't get it working. Well I've spent some time and have back to a some what normal state. (I'm still running chkdsk and such) I have read some of the reviews and people are not pleased with the processor speeds of the machine. My question is if I upgrade the memory to say 8GB will that help or hinder the system?

I would recommend you run a clean format of that laptop . This means you will re-install an operating system on it-- you could put windows 8.1 on it as it is a much lighter OS and allow computers to run much faster. That laptop comes with the E Series AMD Dual Core E1-1500 processor which is not a bad processor especially for basic tasks, most gaming, surfing the internet. That laptop has only 2 GB memory which is very low...It can be upgraded to 8 GB which would give your laptop a lot more power as your processor and memory works hand in hand in completing tasks. 8 GB RAM upgrade would give you a huge improvement. Those RAM sticks you have chosen is a good choice.. You could even spend a little less by getting the Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Modules
